Democratizing Nanotechnology : Intersecting the Philosophy of Science and Science Policy
نویسنده
چکیده
This thesis is an examination of the relevance of the philosophy of science to science policy, focused around an analysis of philosopher Philip Kitcher’s 2001 Science, Truth and Democracy. I consider and draw upon Kitcher’s work from a variety of perspectives. Initially, I use Kitcher’s work to argue for a more democratic approach to nanotechnology policy. The thesis then examines the philosophical changes in position that seemingly enabled Kitcher to embrace a democratic position on science policy. Kitcher’s work is placed in context of the history of the philosophy of science, where I suggest that Otto Neurath might serve as a better model for engagement with science policy. I evaluate Kitcher in terms of criticisms from science policy scholars, and indicate that there are other current philosophers whose work could be more fruitful. My thesis argues that Kitcher should not become the model for philosophers of science to engage in science policy. Kitcher’s justification of democratized science and his ideal of well-ordered science represent a worthwhile and general approach for interfacing philosophy of science and science policy, but the value of further work here is not clear. More particular roles of engagement need to be developed for philosophers of science in science policy.

Democratizing nanotech, then and now.
In October 2006, in the first issue of this journal, I described the idea of ‘democratizing science’ — a state of affairs in which non-experts have active and constructive roles in science policy decisions1. At that time, there were expectations that nanotechnology would be a laboratory for experimenting with the idea of democratizing science. From this came an impressive battery of focus group...
متن کاملA Brief Philosophical Encounter with Science and Medicine
We show a lot of respect for science today. To back up our claims, we tend to appeal to scientific methods. It seems that we all agree that these methods are effective for gaining the truth. We can ask why science has its special status as a supplier of knowledge about our external world and our bodies. Of course, one should not always trust what scientists say. Nonetheless, epistemological jus...

Lack of attention to the philosophy of architecture as an intermediate science between general philosophy and architecture science has caused many researchers to link their research to philosophy without methodology. They introduce their research as the philosophy of Islamic architecture; While the philosophy of Islamic architecture is a kind of philosophy. The general philosophy merely provide...
